Overview
Growing point is Eden Project’s new on-site nursery which facilitates production of their own plant and food requirements, as well as a state-of-the-art research facility for Eden to continue pioneering the study of horticulture, aquaculture, and thalassotherapy. The scheme consists of approximately 7,250m² of greenhouse space to grow plants for the Biomes, crops for catering, and support for the National Wild Flower Centre. This is accompanied by 750m² of support buildings and research/education laboratories.
The design delivers habitats that can support soil carbon sequestration and biodiversity gain as well as demonstrating Eden’s circular approach to regenerative energy use through the harnessing of geothermal heat, and rainwater.
The construction was an exemplar for sustainable construction methodology that mitigates the life-cycle carbon impact by procuring labour resources locally/responsibly, as well as materials with a low embodied carbon content, that can be recycled.
